Young readers who are struggling with having been sexually abused or harassed will see themselves in Della and Suki. Nevaeh and her mom had lived in their car and being able to see herself in a book made her feel that she was not alone. Initially, Della didn't think much of the book. There is a scene where Nevaeh gives Della a book about a homeless girl living in a car. While they may well be realistic behaviors, I wish there was another person (not a counselor) who, like Dr. Unlike Nevaeh's mom and Coach Tony, most of the other adults represented stereotypes (looking at you, Ms. We don't have a lot of backstory for Francine, but she does reveal enough that you feel more comfortable that Suki and Della live with her and that she is their advocate. Not just because of how Della set limits, but to help answer the question of how Clifton learned to "get away with" his behavior. The characters were also well done. Second, the parallel story with Della's classmate Trevor is incredibly well done. Della's voice is authentic and readers will instantly connect with her as she "slow rolls" the details of Clifton's crimes and the way she prepares readers for what's to come.
